Cadiz tri-millennial walking route

Walking through Cadiz is to wander through the ages. As Europe’s longest continuously inhabited city, it offers visitors a wealth of attractions. This two-hour guided tour offers a fascinating introduction to this hidden gem of a city. Some 3,000 years ago, when the Phoenicians settled in this peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic, they gave it the name Gadir, which meant ‘walled stronghold’. The Romans called it Gades and the Moors named it Quadis. This morning walk will stroll through the remains of all those periods to the present. You will stroll from the City Hall to La Caleta, a beautiful city centre beach that has a white pier. Nearby are the castles of Santa Catalina and San Sebastian, which date from when Cadiz was an important bulwark protecting the Spanish Empire. Our walking tour through these three millennia of history will take us through the medieval Populo district, passing the baroque beauty of the Admiral’s House and the old cathedral, which before that was a mosque. Then we’ll move to the awe-inspiring square dominate by the new cathedral to learn all about its little quirks. Visual and sensory treats await at the colourful and fragrant Plaza de las Flores and the nearby market. From there, we will make our way to the commercial hub to admire palaces, churches and historic homes. There will also be – if there is no event taking place – a visit to the casino, an intricate example of neo-Arabesque architecture from the mid-19th century.
