Barbados
Barbados is one of those countries where even the name of the island sounds just right, for the Caribbean the way it rolls around and off your tongue…Barbados… though when it was first discovered by the Portuguese in 1536 on route to South America they saw the bearded fig trees and hence Los Barbados loosely translates as ‘the bearded ones’! The island itself is the easternmost of the Caribbean islands and is roughly shaped like a pear. The main tourism areas on the island are the south side with its flawless beaches protected by reefs and is known as St Lawrence Gap or ‘The Gap’ and is the main fun area of the island with lots of bars, restaurants, night clubs. ‘Lots’ in this context is relative, while there is great choice it couldn’t be considered anything like any of the European party islands. The west coast of the island known as the gold or platinum coast is ribboned with gold sand beaches and many breathtaking 4 & 5 star hotels. The hilly interior meanwhile is festooned with historical sugar plantations, old great houses and increasingly with world class golf courses.
Despite the increase in tourism, Barbados holidays have not yet lost any of their charms and the locals are as friendly now as they have ever been with common refrains to every kind of enquiry being ‘no problem mon’ and ‘soon come’. Some people tend to complain about service levels in Barbados hotels not being up to European standards, we would say it is just more relaxed. Don’t plan to do things in a hurry, don’t leave departing for the airport to the last minute etc and you will have nothing to worry about.
